Good is hard to come by…
Good hosting is always hard to come by. You get someone who has good tech support, but won’t let you run .htaccess files. All kinds of different problems can arise and it’s hard to find a good hosting company. I have always always had problems with finding the right hosting company, and now think that I have found probably the perfect one.
Slicehost is what is called a VPS hosting company. Basically you have a virtual server out at a datacenter somewhere. Slicehost uses the analogy of an orange, or a grapefruit if you will. They give you what is called a ‘slice’. This is basically your own private virtual server. When you first get your slice, there is nothing on your server but basic ssh. They have extensive tutorials on how to set everything up.
So, basically you are the root user of your server, and you can control everything through ssh. This allows you to run your server the way that you want to run it, instead of having to live by someone else’s rules.
